Cristiano Ronaldo Approaches 1,000 Goals with Al Nassr Victory

Cristiano Ronaldo edged closer to a scarcely believable landmark on Friday night, dragging Al Nassr to victory and hauling his own career tally to 978 goals.

The 39-year-old struck the winner in the 50th minute of a tense 2-1 success over Al Taawoun, leaving him just 22 goals short of the mythical 1,000-goal mark. One clean swing of that right boot, another record rewritten.

Records fall as Ronaldo decides it again

Ronaldo played 80 minutes, dictated the game in bursts, and backed up the numbers with end product. He finished with an expected goals (xG) of 1.08, completed 90% of his passes and, crucially, delivered the moment that mattered most.

That goal did more than settle the match. It pushed him to 104 Saudi Pro League goals for Al Nassr, lifting him clear of Mohammad Al Sahlawi’s previous club record of 103 in the league era. In the space of one strike, Ronaldo became Al Nassr’s all-time top scorer in the Saudi Pro League.

Across all competitions, he has now drawn level with Al Sahlawi on 131 goals for the club. Only Majed Abdullah, the towering figure at the top of the chart with 259, remains ahead of him. The gap is still vast, but the pace at which Ronaldo is climbing suggests even that once-untouchable mark will not be ignored.

A tight contest, settled by a familiar figure

Al Nassr did not cruise. They had to dig.

Bassam Al Hurayji stunned them early, firing Al Taawoun into an 11th-minute lead and silencing the away support. The response took time, tension growing with every missed chance, until Samuel Costa finally levelled deep into first-half stoppage time, striking in the 45'+5 to reset the contest on the brink of the interval.

That equaliser changed the mood. The second half belonged to Ronaldo.

Five minutes after the restart, he found the decisive breakthrough. The finish carried the inevitability of a script he has been writing for two decades. The win extended Al Nassr’s extraordinary scoring run to 91 consecutive matches. That sequence now stands as the second-longest goalscoring streak in football history and the longest active run in Saudi Arabian football.

Top of the table, pressure rising

The three points carried real weight in the table. Al Nassr’s hard-fought victory keeps them perfect at the start of the Saudi Pro League season: four games, four wins, 12 points, top of the league.

For Al Taawoun, the picture is far gloomier. This defeat leaves them stranded in 15th place with just two points from their opening fixtures, already staring up at a title contender that shows no sign of slowing.

That sense of momentum has been building. It follows a wild 3-2 comeback against Al Ettifaq in the previous round, a match that showcased both Al Nassr’s volatility and their resilience.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time in that game, they watched their captain’s frustration spill over as Ange Postecoglou substituted Ronaldo at the break. The Portuguese star threw his arms up and dropped the captain’s armband on the pitch, a raw, unfiltered reaction from a player who expects to decide games, not watch them.

Postecoglou’s gamble worked. Sadio Mane struck twice in the second half to complete a dramatic turnaround, and the coach later defended his captain, stressing that Ronaldo is “passionate about football and passionate about Al-Nassr” – the same edge that now fuels this flawless start.
