The context was clear. Ronaldo’s return to United, launched in 2021 with huge fanfare, was rapidly souring. By 2022, that second stint already looked like a misjudged reunion. Boehly sensed an opening: a marquee signing, a commercial juggernaut, and a proven goalscorer in one move. Talks were explored, the concept was real, and the possibility of Ronaldo in Chelsea blue moved beyond fantasy.

Then the football side of the club spoke.
