Crystal Palace Faces Challenge as Manchester City Loom

Crystal Palace’s season has barely begun and already the alarm bells are flickering. A flat, disjointed start away to Everton raised old questions: where is the control, where is the bite, and crucially, where are the goals?

The performance at Goodison Park did little to settle nerves. Palace looked vulnerable, short of rhythm and short of ideas for long spells. And now there’s a murmur in the background that refuses to go away – Liverpool are showing interest in Ismaila Sarr.

That is the one scenario Palace simply cannot entertain as the window ticks down: losing another of their most dangerous players. They can shuffle systems, tweak shapes, promote youth. What they cannot do is strip away the very talent that gives them a puncher’s chance in games like this.

Because there is a goal in this team. Even in that poor showing at Everton, you could still see flashes – the pace on the break, the willingness to run in behind. It’s fragile, but it’s there.

City clunky, but still ruthless

Across the country, Manchester City did what Manchester City usually do: they won. The 90 minutes against Bournemouth were not a masterpiece, but they were a reminder of why Pep Guardiola’s side remain the benchmark.

City were a little clunky, surprisingly so. Mark Guehi operating in midfield was a curious sight, and you can imagine Mateo Kovacic watching on with a raised eyebrow. The structure didn’t always flow, the combinations weren’t as slick as usual, yet Bournemouth were still picked off.

Now comes another twist. The introduction of youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi adds intrigue to Guardiola’s options. He has the talent, the energy, the promise – but he will need time. Time to adjust to the speed, the physicality, the relentless demand for perfection that defines this side.

Even with those wrinkles, City carry an inevitability about them. They dominate the ball, they suffocate space, they wait for the mistake. And when it comes, they strike.

Haaland’s response

One detail from last weekend stands out: Erling Haaland did not score. That is news in itself. For most strikers it’s a footnote. For Haaland, it feels like a warning.

He will not enjoy that blank. He rarely goes quiet two games in a row. With Palace still searching for solidity and confidence, the stage is set for him to reassert himself, to bully defenders, to restore that familiar sense of dread every time he moves into the box.

This will not be a procession. Palace can hurt City on the counter if they are brave enough, and if their key men are still in the building by kick-off. They will have moments. They will ask questions.

But over 90 minutes, City usually find a way. The champions may have to work for it, they may be pushed and prodded, yet the expectation remains the same.
