David Gray Faces Pressure in Huge Cup Tie Against Ross County

David Gray faces what Scott Allan calls a “huge game” on Saturday as Hibernian head to Ross County in the Premier Sports Cup, with the pressure cranking up on the Easter Road head coach.

Allan, a fans’ favourite across three spells in Leith, did not bother dressing it up when he spoke on the BBC Scotland Football Podcast.

“There's no other way to look at it from a Hibs perspective,” he said, with his old club chasing a place in the semi-finals while their league form stutters and European hopes have already vanished.

Hibs have slipped off the pace in the Premiership after damaging back-to-back defeats by Hearts and St Johnstone. The wounds from Europe are still fresh too, a late collapse at home to Gent ripping away a spot in the Conference League and leaving Gray’s side searching for a response and a spark.

That search now runs straight into a Ross County team full of confidence.

County are unbeaten in League One and carry a serious threat in 38-year-old Brian Graham, the former Hibs striker who has already racked up nine goals in all competitions. He knows the club, he knows the expectation, and right now he knows where the net is.

“It will be difficult against a team that is winning games, with a striker that is scoring goals,” Allan warned. “They have a strong squad for a club in League One.”

The message is clear: underestimate them and pay for it.

Yet Allan still leans towards Hibs finding a way. The squad, on paper, should not be drifting. There is pedigree in that dressing room, players who have already shown they can decide big matches when the mood is right.

“I think it could be tricky, but I still believe Hibs will have enough to get through the tie,” he said. “There is some real quality in the team. Whether they are getting the best out of them at the moment is another question.”

That question now hangs over Gray as he takes his team into Dingwall.

A cup semi-final place on offer. A side under scrutiny. An opponent in form and a familiar face in Graham waiting to punish any hesitation.

For Hibs, this is not just another early-season tie. It’s a test of nerve, and of whether this squad can finally turn its potential into something tangible.
