Derby County Secure Alex Mowatt in Permanent Deal

Derby County have finally landed Alex Mowatt, sealing a permanent deal with West Bromwich Albion and ending a long pursuit of the midfielder.

The 29-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Pride Park for an undisclosed fee after completing his medical and the final paperwork today. Despite talk in the West Midlands of a figure close to £2 million, DerbyshireLive understands the fee is around £600,000, with Mowatt having entered the final year of his contract at the Hawthorns.

Eustace gets his man at last

John Eustace has tracked Mowatt for some time. The Derby head coach wanted him through the door last summer and has kept the midfielder high on his list ever since. Derby continued to monitor his situation even after Mowatt agreed a two-year extension to stay at West Brom, waiting for the right moment to move.

That moment arrived this window. Derby pushed, West Brom were prepared to deal, and Eustace now has the type of midfielder he has been craving: experienced, left-footed, and comfortable dictating play from deep.

Championship know-how and a trusted profile

Mowatt brings a wealth of Championship experience and a reputation for building attacks from the base of midfield. Those qualities have been central to Derby’s interest, with the club keen to add control and creativity in the middle of the pitch.

Born in Doncaster, Mowatt has spent the last five years at the Hawthorns and has represented England at under-19 and under-20 level. He has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham United and playing 73 minutes before making way for Conor Townsend.

His career has followed a steady, demanding route through English football’s heartlands. A product of the Leeds United academy, he broke through at Elland Road before moving to Barnsley, where he became a key figure and eventually captain.

Barnsley leader, West Brom schemer

At Barnsley, Mowatt’s influence grew season by season. He made more than 140 appearances for the Tykes and captained them to the Championship play-offs in 2021, a campaign that underlined his leadership and set-piece threat.

A loan spell at Oxford United added another layer to his development before Valerien Ismaël took him to West Brom on a free transfer. Ismaël was effusive at the time, describing him as “an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality,” highlighting his ability to score from distance and from set-pieces, and praising his work rate and energy.

Mowatt later spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, where he was part of a side that finished fourth in the Championship, reinforcing his status as a proven performer at this level.
