Derry City Advances to FAI Cup Fourth Round After Thrilling Match

Derry City survived a bruising night in Belfield, rode their luck more than once, and still walked away with a place in the Club Orange FAI Cup fourth round. They had Michael Duffy’s dead-ball class and new signing Tyler Smith’s sharp finishing to thank for a 2-1 win that UCD will feel they let slip.

The Students were outstanding for long stretches. They hit the woodwork three times, carved Derry open with clever movement and crisp passing, and had the Premier Division side hanging on at the end. But the cup rarely rewards nearly-men.

Duffy strikes, UCD respond

Derry arrived without Liam Boyce and without James McClean, the latter still sidelined by a contract dispute. That left Duffy as the senior attacking reference point – and he delivered inside seven minutes.

A tired lunge from Ciaran Lennox on Smith handed Derry a free kick in prime territory. Duffy stepped up and whipped it into the top corner, leaving Noah Douglas rooted. One chance, one ruthless finish. It looked like the template for a comfortable away win.

UCD tore that script up almost immediately.

Louis Dignam, excellent all night, dragged his side level on 17 minutes. He burned past Patrick McClean, rounded Brian Maher with composure and rolled the ball home. A Premier Division defence, undone by pure pace and conviction.

From there, the game tilted towards the Students.

Callioce rattles the frame, Derry wobble

UCD grew in confidence, and Derry’s back line began to creak. The hosts varied their play smartly, mixing short, intricate combinations with direct balls that unsettled the visitors’ centre-halves.

Full-back Luca Callioce, just 18, almost stole the show before half-time. Twice he let fly from around 20 yards. Twice he thundered efforts off the bar, the second after a slick turn created from Mikey McCullough’s sharp pass. Maher was beaten both times; the woodwork came to his rescue.

Dignam kept asking questions, too. When Douglas launched long and Derry misjudged the flight, the forward seized on the mistake and slipped Goodness Ogbonna through on goal. One heavy touch was all it took for Maher to sweep out and smother. It felt like a turning point.

UCD had Derry penned in, their passing patterns dragging red shirts out of shape. The Premier Division side, stripped of some of their usual star power, clung to parity and waited for a break.

Smith pounces against the run of play

The punishment for UCD’s wastefulness arrived with brutal inevitability.

On the edge of the Students’ box, Smith and Duffy combined with a neat one-two, a rare moment of clarity from Derry in the final third. Smith, the new arrival from Rochdale, didn’t blink. From close range, he buried his finish and swung the tie back Derry’s way, very much against the run of play.

The goal jolted the visitors. Changes followed, and with fresh legs came a measure of control that had been missing for most of the contest. UCD, though, refused to fade.

Substitute Charles Akinrintayo almost forced extra-time on his own. He broke clear on the counter and slammed a shot off the post, Maher beaten again. The Students could almost feel the net ripple. Instead, the ball spat away, another reminder that this was not to be their night.

Last-ditch defending seals it

UCD still had one more big chance.

Akinrintayo danced through challenges and laid the ball off perfectly for fellow substitute Stephen Mohan. From point-blank range, he seemed certain to score. Patrick McClean hurled himself in front of the shot, blocking what looked a near-certain equaliser.

That was the moment Derry finally broke UCD’s resistance – not with a goal, but with a tackle.

The whistle went soon after. Derry were through, bruised but breathing, their cup run intact. UCD walked off with nothing tangible, just the echo of woodwork and the nagging sense that on another night, against this opposition, they might have had more than just applause.
