Diomande: Real Madrid’s Record Signing Living a Dream

Diomande walked into the Bernabeu as Real Madrid’s new record signing and sounded like a player still pinching himself to check it is real.

The 19-year-old winger, one of Europe’s brightest emerging talents, has spoken for the first time since completing his move, describing the transfer as the fulfilment of a childhood dream.

“It was like a dream because there is no bigger club,” he told SportyTV. “From the moment I found out, I couldn't sleep. I couldn't believe it. I spoke with Juni [Calafat] and then I spoke with the coach. I was surprised because he spoke French.”

From sleepless nights to the most star‑studded dressing room in football: Diomande now finds himself sharing space with Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. The scale of it all has not dulled his edge.

He called himself “proud and happy because I have made my dream come true,” but the message was not of arrival and comfort. It was of ambition.

Mourinho’s 5am Call

Behind the transfer sits a familiar figure. José Mourinho did not just sign off the deal; he helped sell the project personally.

The Ivorian revealed that the “Special One” was willing to disrupt his own sleep to make the teenager feel wanted.

“Mourinho got up at 5 in the morning to talk to me. That means he is important,” Diomande said. “When Madrid calls you, you can't say no, so I said: ‘If they want me, that's where I'll be.’”

Those early conversations set the tone. When Diomande finally arrived at Valdebebas, the bond between coach and player was sealed almost immediately.

“As soon as I arrived, he told me: ‘I promised you that you were going to be part of my team, and here you are,’” the winger recalled. “And I told him: ‘I’m happy to work with you because you are the best.’ I can learn a lot from him; he is the right coach to continue my development. I am prepared to die for him.”

A bold line from a teenager, but one that fits the intensity Mourinho demands.

Mourinho’s Version of the Story

Mourinho, though, has been keen to frame his own role differently.

Asked in a separate interview whether he had specifically requested Diomande when he returned to the Madrid dugout, the Portuguese coach pushed back.

“No, I didn't ask for anyone,” he said. “I came in without demanding a single player, having taken a good look at the squad and knowing exactly what I wanted to happen.”

The club then placed Diomande’s name on the table. At that point, the decision was straightforward.

“Finding a wide player [like Diomande] who is quick, aggressive, and can play on both flanks isn't easy, it's incredibly tough,” Mourinho explained. “Add to that the fact that he's young, has room to develop, and has many years ahead of him at Real Madrid... when that opportunity came up, I didn't want to get into whether he cost 120, 80, 40, or 20 [million].”

The fee, whatever the final figure, will follow him. Mourinho’s message is clear: the talent matters more than the number.

From Leganes Debut to Bernabeu Home

Diomande’s journey to this point carries its own touch of football poetry.

He made his professional debut at the Bernabeu, not in white but for Leganes. The stadium that now welcomes him as a record signing once watched him take his first steps in the professional game.

“It is God's doing. I believe a lot in God,” he said. “It has been quite a coincidence. I just want to enjoy every day.”

One memory from that debut night stands out above the rest.

“From that match I remember swapping shirts with Mbappe, and today we are in the same dressing room laughing together. I will never forget Leganes because it was the only club that gave me the opportunity to show my quality.”

From trading shirts with Mbappe to trading passes with him: the arc is remarkable, and Madrid expect it to continue upward.

A New Weapon for Madrid

On the pitch, Diomande brings exactly what Mourinho described: pace, aggression, and the ability to operate on either flank. That versatility gives Real Madrid another dimension as they chase domestic and European dominance this season.

He arrives as a record signing, a teenager ready to fight for a place among superstars, and a winger already pledging to “die” for his coach.

Now comes the only part that really counts at this club: proving it all under the Bernabeu lights.
