Djed Spence Joins Inter Milan for £30m from Tottenham

Inter Milan have sealed a £30m move for England defender Djed Spence from Tottenham, closing a deal that hands the full-back a fresh start in Italy and delivers Spurs a sizeable profit.

The agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause, with all elements of the transfer now in place after days of talks between the clubs. Spence was granted permission to fly to Italy on Friday for his medical while negotiations continued, and the final package has now been signed off at £30m.

From World Cup breakout to San Siro stage

Spence arrives at Inter on the back of a standout summer. He was one of England’s brightest performers in their run to third place at the World Cup, a tournament that underlined his potential on the biggest stage.

At Tottenham, though, the path to regular football looked increasingly blocked. Pedro Porro has nailed down the right-back slot, while Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies all offer options on the left. For a 24-year-old eager to play every week, the writing was on the wall.

Inter, hunting for a new right-wing-back, moved decisively once their pursuit of Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby stalled. They turned to Spence, a player already acclimatised to Serie A after a six‑month loan at Genoa from January 2024 that left a strong impression in Italy and whetted his appetite for a permanent move.

Spurs cash in, Inter gamble on upside

Spence had three years left on his Spurs contract, with an option for a further year, after arriving from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a deal worth up to £20m. Tottenham paid £12.5m up front at the time and now more than double that figure comes in from Inter.

Sky Sports News reporter Mark McAdam summed up the mixed feeling around the deal. Spurs supporters, he said, have only seen “brilliance in flashes” from Spence in North London, but they also watched him shine for England at the World Cup and know what he could become.

That is where the tension lies for Tottenham fans: a significant profit on a player who never fully broke through, but a lingering sense that £30m is not a huge fee for a defender with such a high ceiling. Inside the club, though, the move has not caught anyone cold. Spurs have been braced for his departure and already have potential replacements mapped out.

A farewell with feeling

Spence marked the end of his Spurs spell with an emotional message on X, closing the chapter with a nod to the highs that did come, even in a stop-start stint.

“A special chapter comes to an end,” he wrote. “It’s been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I’ll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao.

“Thanks to all the staff members who’ve helped me along the way, the players who’ve become family and most importantly thank you to the fans.

“It’s time for a new chapter, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart. COYS!!”

Now the scene shifts. Inter get the dynamic wing-back they have been chasing, a World Cup-tested defender entering his prime. Tottenham walk away with a profit and a gap to fill.

The question is simple: in a few years’ time, will £30m look like smart business for Spurs, or a bargain Inter will be quietly delighted they jumped on?
