Trump was tasked with handing the World Cup trophy to the winning Spanish team, a role announced just last month. This followed a similar awkward moment last year when he inserted himself into Chelsea’s Club World Cup celebration and refused to step aside.

This time, after giving the trophy to Spain and congratulating some players, Trump lingered on stage instead of leaving the spotlight to the champions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen trying to nudge him off the podium, but Trump stayed, smiling awkwardly.

An Australian commentator remarked that broadcasters would likely edit Trump out of the footage because he disrupted the celebration.

Handing a Trophy to a Nation He Criticized

Just days before the final, Trump harshly criticized Spain during a July 8 news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. He called Spain “a wasted cause” and expressed a desire to end trade relations, accusing Spain of not pulling its weight in NATO.

"Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please. Including visits. We don’t want anything to do."

"We don’t have to trade with them. I don’t want to do any more trade with them. Make it immediately. Don’t even talk to them. They’re hopeless. Bad people."

Though these comments targeted Spain’s government rather than its soccer team, it must have been awkward for Trump to smile and hand over the trophy to the very country he had condemned so harshly just days earlier.
