Eclipse Halts AFC Turnford Non-League Clash

AFC Turnford expected to be worrying about Cuffley’s front line on Wednesday night. Instead, they were told to worry about the Sun.

The non-league side, who groundshare at Wormley Rovers Football Club in Wormley, Hertfordshire, were ordered to postpone their Herts Senior County League fixture because of the solar eclipse.

The issue wasn’t the opposition. It was the light.

With the partial eclipse scheduled to begin at around 18:20 BST and last until roughly 20:10, Turnford’s 19:00 kick-off suddenly fell into a window where daylight could not be guaranteed. Their ground has no floodlights, and that proved decisive.

Club founder and player Ronnie Bates admitted the ruling caught him off guard.

“We’ve been told if you don’t have floodlights, you have to postpone your game,” he said. “I was surprised, but we are just following what has been said.

“It’s unusual to see a game called off like that, as we’ve never had it before. We are starting to lose light in the evenings, but we normally play at 15:00.”

The decision came from the Herts Senior County League, which has been contacted for comment, after guidance went out ahead of the rare celestial event, when the Sun will be almost entirely blocked by the Moon for around an hour and 50 minutes. Exact timings vary by location, but the overlap with early evening fixtures was clear.

Cuffley FC confirmed that the directive was not limited to one game. The club told the BBC that all sides in the league had been contacted by the HSCL and Hertfordshire FA and asked to move any Thursday fixtures that could not be played under floodlights because of the eclipse.

For AFC Turnford, it is another twist in a short but ambitious story. Formed six years ago by a group of friends from Haileybury Turnford School in Cheshunt, the club has climbed into the Premier Division and is pushing to rise further up the pyramid, documenting its journey on YouTube.

They are used to juggling player availability, pitches and the usual chaos of non-league life. Now they can add “solar eclipse” to the list of things that have stopped a game.

The football will be back under normal skies soon enough. The question for Turnford is whether this unexpected pause interrupts their momentum, or simply adds another chapter to a growing underdog tale.
