Enzo Fernández’s future at Chelsea is burning hotter by the day.

The Argentine, who made it clear before the summer that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge, was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup second-round tie against Luton. Not on the bench. Not in the stands in a tracksuit. Nowhere near the team sheet.

Xabi Alonso insisted it was his call. Nothing more, nothing less.

“The decision not to call him up was mine,” the Chelsea head coach said after the win, keen to stamp his authority on the story before it ran away from him.

Alonso stressed there was no disciplinary angle, no training-ground bust-up, no dramatic showdown. For him, it was about rotation and rhythm.

“It was simply because of today’s match. We have other players who need minutes,” he explained in his press conference. Asked when he had decided to leave Enzo out, he didn’t hesitate: “Wednesday afternoon. It was a decision I made myself.”

The message was clear: this was a football choice, not a political one.

Even so, the timing is impossible to ignore. In England, reports suggest Manchester City are weighing up a move for the midfielder before the transfer window closes. A player who cost Chelsea a fortune and arrived as a World Cup winner is now the subject of serious interest from the champions, just as he slips out of a matchday squad.

Alonso, though, pushed back against any idea that Enzo is downing tools.

“Enzo is a good professional. He is training well and I have nothing to say about that,” he said, repeating the point for emphasis. For the coach, this was about the “specific needs” of the Luton game and managing the workload of a packed squad.

He also left the door wide open for an immediate return.

“They are simply decisions we have to make with the match we were playing tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday,” Alonso added, pointing towards the league fixture against Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

So the stage is set. Either Enzo walks back into the side at the weekend and the noise quietens for a while, or his absence becomes the loudest signal yet that his Chelsea chapter is edging towards an abrupt end – with Manchester City watching every move.
