Ethan Williams Joins Peterborough United from Manchester United

Manchester United have confirmed another young talent is on his way out of Old Trafford, with winger Ethan Williams joining Peterborough United in a permanent deal.

The move continues a summer of quiet trimming behind the scenes, even as the headlines stay fixed on United’s search for a new midfielder, left-back and striker. A left winger had been on the wishlist earlier in the window, but with Marcus Rashford now expected to stay, that pursuit has been parked. The reshaping has instead shifted towards clearing pathways and cashing in on those the club do not see breaking into the senior side.

Williams, 20, is the latest to go.

United cash in on academy winger

United announced the transfer on their official channels, confirming the academy forward has agreed a move to the League One club, subject to registration. It follows a pattern. Radek Vitek has already been sold to Middlesbrough, Tyler Fredricson has departed for Lausanne-Sport, and Altay Bayindir has headed to Celta Vigo on loan with a €4m option to buy attached.

There is also the possibility of more movement at the top end of the pitch. Joshua Zirkzee will be offloaded if United land a new centre-forward to compete with Benjamin Sesko. The message is clear: if you are not central to the long-term plan, there is a price.

In Williams’ case, that price has been revealed. talkSPORT’s chief transfer reporter Alex Crook stated the deal is worth just north of £750,000, including performance-related add-ons, and labelled it a “good signing” for Peterborough on social media. For a player yet to make a senior competitive appearance for United, it is a tidy fee.

Peterborough land “highly-rated” wide threat

Peterborough wasted no time talking up their new arrival. In their own announcement, the League One club described Williams as a “highly-rated Manchester United winger” and confirmed he has signed a long-term contract for what they called a “sizeable undisclosed fee”.

They also underlined his momentum coming into the move. Williams has just completed a pre-season tour with United, a trip that included a goal in a 5-0 win over Rosenborg. That involvement, and that strike, will not have gone unnoticed lower down the pyramid, where clubs are constantly scanning big clubs’ pre-season squads for opportunity.

Posh boss Luke Williams is clearly convinced he has found one.

“Ethan is a player that will give us another option in the wide areas, he is quick, direct and will be a threat and I am looking forward to working with him,” the manager said. “He has already got first team experience at a few clubs and joins us after being away with Manchester United on their pre-season tour, so he is fit and ready to go.”

For Peterborough, it fits their long-established model: invest in young, hungry attackers, polish them, and watch their value rise. For United, it is another small but deliberate step in reshaping the squad and the wage bill while the major pieces of their rebuild are still being chased.
