Fabio Vieira Completes Transfer to Hamburg

Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal chapter is over. His Hamburg story now begins.

The Portuguese midfielder has completed a permanent move to the Bundesliga side in a deal worth 10m euros (£8.6m), ending a stop-start spell in north London that never quite caught fire.

From project player to permanent exit

Vieira arrived at Arsenal from Porto in 2022 as a classic “upside” signing – a creative left-footer with vision, bought with the future in mind. He leaves with 49 appearances to his name, flashes of quality, but without ever nailing down a regular starting role.

The last two seasons told their own story. Arsenal sent him back to Porto on loan for the 2024-25 campaign, then on to Hamburg last season. In Germany he found rhythm, minutes and a club willing to commit. Hamburg have now turned that loan into a full-time deal, taking the 26-year-old back to the Bundesliga and away from the logjam in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

Arsenal’s attacking reshuffle

Vieira was one of several players Arsenal had earmarked for sale as they reshape the squad. The clear-out is not expected to stop with him.

Forwards Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli are also expected to leave on permanent deals, signalling a significant refresh in the attacking and creative zones of the pitch. Arsenal are trimming the group, banking fees and opening space for a new core.

Nwaneri next to go – but only on loan

While senior players move on permanently, one of the club’s brightest prospects is set for a different kind of departure.

Academy graduate Ethan Nwaneri is closing in on a loan move to Borussia Dortmund, a club with a proven track record of developing young talent at the highest level.
