FC Cincinnati Sign Tyrell Malacia from Manchester United

FC Cincinnati have made one of the standout moves of the MLS summer, landing former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer and handing him a long-term deal in Ohio.

The 27-year-old Netherlands international has chosen to reboot his career across the Atlantic, signing a contract that runs through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 MLS season. For a club intent on staying near the top of the Eastern Conference, this is more than a depth move. It’s a marker.

The deal was confirmed on Friday, a clear signal that Cincinnati intend to keep pushing with an experienced, battle-tested defender anchoring their back line.

Roster gymnastics to get it done

To bring Malacia in, Cincinnati’s front office had to get creative.

The club announced it had acquired an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, paying $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) to make room. That’s a significant outlay for a slot two years down the line and underlines just how highly Cincinnati rate their new signing.

The move fits the way the club is building: targeted, aggressive, and focused on players who can step in immediately. General Manager Chris Albright summed up the mood around the deal, saying the club is excited to add a player with Malacia’s experience.

Leaving Old Trafford frustrations behind

For Malacia, this is a clean break from a turbulent spell at Old Trafford.

He joined Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2022 and started brightly under Erik ten Hag, showing the energy and aggression that had made him one of the Eredivisie’s standout full-backs. Then the injuries hit. Repeated fitness problems stalled his progress and restricted his availability, stopping him from ever truly nailing down the left-back spot.

Even so, he still managed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competitions. Those minutes came against some of the sharpest attackers in world football, experience that now follows him into MLS.

Now, instead of battling for rhythm in a stop-start role at United, he arrives in Cincinnati as a headline addition and an immediate candidate to become a leader in the dressing room.

A defender with real pedigree

Malacia doesn’t come to MLS as a reclamation project. He comes as a proven top-flight defender.

Across his career in Europe, he has already passed 250 professional appearances, from Feyenoord to Manchester United and back in the Eredivisie. He has dealt with Champions League nights, Premier League intensity, and the pressure of title races.

Cincinnati fans have already had a first look at him through the club’s social media teasers, the “Orange and Blue” pushing the hype ahead of his debut. The expectation is clear: he isn’t here to simply adjust and settle. He is here to raise the level.

Silverware on both sides of the Channel

For all the setbacks in England, Malacia arrives in the United States with medals to show.

He was part of the Manchester United squad that ended the club’s trophy drought by lifting the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a moment that helped reset standards at Old Trafford. More recently, a loan spell back in the Netherlands saw him play his part in PSV Eindhoven’s 2024-25 Eredivisie title win, adding another major honour to his record.

On the international stage, his résumé is just as solid. Malacia has earned nine senior caps for the Netherlands and was included in the Dutch squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team reached the quarter-finals before a dramatic exit.

Now he trades World Cup stages and Old Trafford floodlights for MLS nights in Ohio.

For Cincinnati, the question isn’t whether he can handle the step. It’s how much higher he can push a team already chasing the top of the Eastern Conference.
