The signs from Barcelona are just as telling. The forward did not train with the squad on Thursday, having also been excused from the previous day’s session. With negotiations entering their final phase, both clubs are effectively treating him as a player in transit.

For Barcelona, the numbers matter. Offloading a player with only one year left on his contract for around €55 million is viewed internally as strong business. The sporting blow is obvious — this is a World Cup final hero, a player who has delivered on the biggest stage — but the financial logic is difficult to ignore for a club still wrestling with economic constraints.

A departure that unlocks the Rodri plan

Ferran’s exit is not an isolated move. It sits right at the heart of Barcelona’s broader summer strategy: clear space and raise funds to go after Rodri.

The Catalan club have already sent Manchester City a second proposal worth €60 million, combining a fixed fee with performance-related variables, after seeing an initial €50 million offer rejected. The response from England has not softened; reports indicate City have also turned down this improved bid.

Barcelona are not walking away. Inside the club there is confidence that a deal for Rodri can still be forced through. The plan is to table a third, decisive offer in the region of €70 million — €60 million guaranteed, plus €10 million in add-ons.

This is where Ferran’s move becomes crucial. The €55 million expected from PSG would not only strengthen Barcelona’s hand financially, it would also ease the pressure on squad registration and salary limits, both key hurdles in getting any marquee signing over the line.
