Feyenoord Falls to Westerlo in Friendly Match
Behind closed doors and away from the usual noise, Feyenoord’s reserves and fringe players were given their stage on Monday. The result was a 2-1 defeat to Belgian side KVC Westerlo – and another reminder that even in training games, sharpness matters.
Shaqueel van Persie supplied the early highlight. The son of club legend Robin showed the family instinct in front of goal, reacting quickest to a Sem Steijn corner and finishing decisively to put the Rotterdam side in front. It was a smart, striker’s goal: alive to the second ball, ruthless with the chance.
That lead did not last until the interval. Westerlo worked their way into the match, found an equaliser before half-time and then tightened their grip after the restart, eventually turning the game around to lead 2-1.
Feyenoord's Lineup
Feyenoord’s starting XI was built around the players who had begun on the bench in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Go Ahead Eagles. On the touchline, it was Sipke Hulshoff and Saïd Bakkati barking the orders, not Giovanni van Bronckhorst, as the coaching staff spread the workload during a busy spell.
Changes and Late Pressure
Changes came quickly after the break. Casper Tengstedt and Jivayno Zinhagel replaced Van Persie and Jordan Lotomba, injecting fresh legs into the attack. An hour into the contest, Luka Ivanusec entered on the right flank for Gonçalo Borges, another move aimed at tilting the game back in Feyenoord’s favour.
The pressure almost paid off late on. Tengstedt carved out two good chances to level the score, twice finding himself in position to drag Feyenoord back from the brink. Twice he failed to convert. With those opportunities gone, so too went any realistic hope of avoiding defeat.
The friendly ends with a narrow loss, but the real scrutiny will return at the weekend. After dropping costly points in the 2-2 draw with Go Ahead Eagles, Feyenoord now head to promoted SC Cambuur on Sunday in the Vriendenloterij Eredivisie – facing a side still searching for their first point after two rounds, and a match they can hardly afford to treat like another rehearsal.
