Fifa Lifts Water Bottle Ban for 2026 World Cup
Fifa has rowed back on its controversial World Cup bottle ban, confirming fans will be allowed to take sealed disposable water bottles into stadiums at the 2026 tournament.
The governing body had sparked anger with a late change to its stadium policy, blocking supporters from bringing in any bottles, cups, jars or cans on safety grounds. That blanket ruling was quickly condemned by fan groups, who questioned both the timing and the practicality of the move for matches expected to be played in high temperatures.
Under pressure, Fifa has now narrowed the restriction.
Only hard-sided reusable bottles are banned. Soft, plastic disposable bottles – as long as they are factory-sealed – will be permitted.
"Each spectator can bring with them one 20 ounce (560ml) soft, plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle into the stadium," said World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi, setting out the revised stance.
The key line from Fifa is clear: “What is not allowed are hard-sided resealable water containers, which could pose a safety and security risk."
So fans regain at least one basic comfort – the right to carry in a single sealed drink – while the organisers cling to their security red line. With three host nations, vast travel demands and a record number of teams, the handling of details like this will say plenty about how ready Fifa really is for its biggest World Cup yet.
