Teams Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026: Latest Updates on Exits
Some North American teams found their 2026 World Cup journey cut short sooner than they hoped. With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the chances of advancing beyond the group stage have increased compared to previous editions. Yet, disappointment remains for those who exit early and for favorites who stumble in later rounds.
Expanded Format Brings More Opportunities
The shift from 32 to 48 teams adds an extra knockout round. This means only 16 teams will be eliminated at the group stage, with many more moving forward to the Round of 32. Despite this, some teams have already seen their campaigns end.
Confirmed Exits as of June 25, 2026
Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, and Panama were among the earliest to bow out. New tie-break rules played a big role in this quick elimination, with head-to-head results now determining rankings when points are equal. For example, Haiti’s losses to Scotland and Brazil mean even if they reach three points, they cannot surpass those teams in Group C because Scotland won their direct match.
How Tie-Breakers Decide Group Rankings
FIFA's updated criteria for ranking teams level on points start with the head-to-head results between tied teams. The sequence goes like this:
- Head-to-head points
- Goal difference in those matches
- Goals scored in those matches
If still tied, it moves to overall group performance:
- Goal difference across all group games
- Total goals scored in all group games
- Team conduct score based on yellow/red cards
- Latest FIFA ranking as a final measure
Third-Place Teams Can Still Advance
One feature of this expanded format is that eight of the best third-place teams from the groups will also advance to the Round of 32. Their ranking depends on points, goal difference, goals scored, team conduct, and FIFA ranking.
From 32 to 48 Teams
Since 1998, 32 nations have competed in the World Cup. Starting in 2026, the field grows to 48, introducing four extra groups and an additional knockout round before the quarterfinals. The champion will now play eight matches instead of seven.
