FIFA World Cup 2026: Teams Advancing to the Round of 16

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across Mexico, Canada, and the United States, features a record 48 teams. This expansion introduced a new knockout phase starting with a Round of 32 rather than the traditional Round of 16.

The opening Round of 32 kicked off with South Africa facing host Canada in Los Angeles. The winners from these 16 matches will continue to compete for a spot in the Round of 16. Here’s a look at the teams that have secured their place so far.

Canada

Canada was the first to advance after a dramatic late goal by Stephen Eustaquio against South Africa. His powerful shot in stoppage time sealed a 1-0 victory. Canada will face the winner of Morocco versus the Netherlands.

Brazil

Brazil overcame an early deficit against Japan. Kaishu Sano’s skillful run gave Japan the lead, but Casemiro equalized in the second half. Gabriel Martinelli then scored a stoppage-time winner, pushing Brazil forward. Their next opponent will be the winner of Norway and Ivory Coast.

Paraguay

A thrilling shootout win over Germany sent Paraguay into the next round. After a 1-1 draw through extra time, Paraguay prevailed 4-3 on penalties with Jose Canale scoring the decisive kick. Paraguay will meet France or Sweden.

Morocco

Morocco advanced past the Netherlands on penalties after a 1-1 draw, thanks to Ismael Saibari’s winning effort. They will challenge Canada next.

Norway

Erling Haaland’s late goal propelled Norway past Ivory Coast in a tightly contested match. Norway earned their first-ever knockout win at the World Cup and will take on Brazil.

France

France controlled their game against Sweden, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice and Bradley Barcola adding another goal. They will face Paraguay next.

Mexico

Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 after a weather delay, with goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez. They will play the winner of England versus DR Congo.

England

England rallied from behind to beat DR Congo 2-1. Harry Kane scored twice, including a late winner. Their next match is against Mexico in Mexico City.

Belgium

Belgium staged a comeback from 0-2 down to defeat Senegal 3-2 in extra time. Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans were key, with Tielemans scoring a late penalty. Belgium awaits the winner between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
