How Folarin Balogun's Red Card Led to Free Domino's Pizza for US Fans

During the World Cup Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Folarin Balogun received a red card that ruled him out of the upcoming United States match versus Belgium. This means the USMNT will miss their top scorer, who had netted three goals in the tournament so far. But some American supporters found a silver lining in the situation—free pizza.

Domino's 'Emergency Pizzas for Red Card' Promotion Explained

Domino's Pizza launched a promotion ahead of the World Cup called "Emergency Pizzas for Red Card." The deal promised that if any player on the US national team got a red card during the tournament, a number of entrants would be randomly selected to win free or discounted pizza. Domino's even noted they weren’t hoping for this to happen but wanted to soften the blow with free food.

To qualify, fans had to register by June 10. Once a red card was issued to a US player, up to 63,371 entrants would receive a coupon for one free medium two-topping pizza. Others who entered would get a consolation prize coupon offering 20% off certain menu items.

The Incident That Triggered the Promotion

Balogun’s red card came in the 64th minute after he made a dangerous challenge, stepping on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. The referee initially did not show a card, but after a VAR review prompted by Brazilian official Raphael Claus, the red card was given. The decision sparked debate because Balogun appeared to be genuinely contesting the ball without intent to harm.

The US had to play the last third of the match with 10 men, and Balogun faces suspension for the next game against Belgium. World Cup rules do not allow appeals on red card decisions, so he will miss the Round of 16 match.

Claiming Your Free Pizza

Fans who signed up before the deadline should check their emails for a coupon. Winners of the grand prize get a free medium pizza with two toppings, while others receive a 20% discount coupon. Those who missed the June 10 registration date are not eligible for this offer.
