France's World Cup Journey: Titles, Records, and Highlights

France enters the 2026 World Cup aiming to claim their third star. The team is determined to bounce back after losing the 2022 final in Qatar on penalties.

A Rich World Cup History

France’s involvement in the World Cup stretches back to the tournament’s first edition in 1930. They were among just four European teams competing in Uruguay that year. Since then, France has appeared in the competition 17 times, a record tied for sixth most by any nation.

Despite missing six World Cups—including a 12-year gap from 1982 to 1994—the French squad has displayed remarkable consistency since the early 2000s.

Memorable Triumphs and Heartbreaks

Their maiden title came in 1998 when Didier Deschamps captained the host nation to a 3-0 victory over Brazil at Stade de France. Zinedine Zidane’s two headers sealed the win.

Two decades later, France lifted the trophy again in Russia, with Deschamps now as head coach. They defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final, highlighted by a goal from 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe, who became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele in 1958.

Between these wins lie two runner-up finishes. In 2006, France lost to Italy on penalties in Berlin. More recently, they fell to Argentina on penalties in 2022 despite a hat trick by Mbappe that pushed the match into extra time.

Overall World Cup Performance

Aside from the finals, France reached the semifinals twice more, finishing third in both 1958 and 1986.

Up to and including the ongoing 2026 tournament (prior to the Round of 16 game against Paraguay), France has played 70 World Cup matches. Their record shows 38 wins, 19 draws, and 13 losses.
