Gavin Bazunu Joins Bolton Wanderers to Revive Career

Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton spell and dropped back into the Championship with Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal that he hopes will relaunch his club and international career.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland goalkeeper leaves St Mary’s after slipping down the pecking order, despite making 19 Championship appearances last season. Since arriving from Manchester City in 2022 as a highly rated prospect, his trajectory at Southampton stalled, his game time shrinking as others moved ahead of him.

His development turned bitty. A loan to Standard Liege in Belgium, then an injury-affected stint at Stoke City in the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, broke up any rhythm he tried to build. For a keeper once fast-tracked into the Ireland senior side, those stop-start months felt a long way from the momentum he enjoyed at Shamrock Rovers and in his early Manchester City days.

Bolton now offer what he craves most: minutes. Real, regular, unforgiving minutes.

Bazunu, capped 22 times by Ireland, made it clear that the promise of a clear run in goal drove his decision to move for an undisclosed fee.

"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," he told Wanderers TV, laying out both his own aims and Bolton’s wider push.

"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels."

That line matters. For a goalkeeper whose last Ireland appearance came in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland, and whose most recent call-up under Heimir Hallgrimsson was last November, “show my levels” is code for something bigger: force his way back into the national conversation.

At Bolton, he will walk into a dressing room being reshaped for a promotion tilt. He knows he is not the only new face, but he sounded determined to set the tone.

"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs."

For Bazunu, that means one thing above all: reclaiming the feeling of being a first-choice goalkeeper, every week, with everything on the line. If he finds that again at Bolton, the knock on Ireland’s door will not be far behind.
