Giovanni Reyna Leaves Bundesliga for Strasbourg: A New Chapter

Giovanni Reyna’s seven-year chapter in German football is over. The USMNT playmaker has left Borussia Mönchengladbach and completed a move to Strasbourg, trading the Bundesliga grind for a fresh start in Ligue 1.

It feels like the right time. It also feels like a crossroads.

Reyna arrived in Germany as a teenager in 2019, stepping out of New York City FC's academy and straight into the glare of Borussia Dortmund’s spotlight. For a while, he looked built for it. Sharp between the lines, fearless on the ball, he quickly grew into one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting young talents, the kind of creative midfielder clubs plan around for a decade.

Then the rhythm broke.

Injuries cut into his minutes, then into his confidence. Just as he seemed ready to kick on, another setback arrived. Form slipped, opportunities shrank, and the early surge of his Dortmund career began to flatten out.

A loan to Nottingham Forest in the second half of the 2023/24 season was supposed to jolt his trajectory back upward. It didn’t. The move never really caught fire, and Reyna returned to Germany still searching for momentum rather than riding a wave of it.

Last summer, he switched across the Rhine to Borussia Mönchengladbach, a move framed as a reset inside the same league he knew so well. It never truly became that. Reyna managed just one goal and one assist in 20 competitive appearances, flashes of quality without the sustained run that might have rebuilt his status.

Gladbach’s head of sports, Rouven Schröder, summed it up bluntly but respectfully: Gio is an excellent player, he said, one who only showed glimpses of his potential during his year at the club and couldn’t consistently display his ability because of injuries. The farewell came with good wishes and an acknowledgment of what everyone has seen — and what they still believe is in there.

The contrast with his international role is striking. For the USA, Reyna remains central. He has already earned 43 caps and played in all five of his country’s matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, including a stunning outside-of-the-boot strike against Paraguay that underlined why coaches keep trusting him. In national team colors, the swagger hasn’t disappeared.

Across his time with Dortmund and Gladbach, Reyna leaves the Bundesliga with 125 appearances, 16 goals and 13 assists. Those numbers hint at both longevity and a sense of unfinished business: enough games to matter, not enough continuity to fully define him.

Now comes Strasbourg, and with it, a different kind of test. A new league, a new environment, and a chance to turn those glimpses back into a full picture. At 23, Reyna is no longer the prodigy breaking through in Dortmund yellow. He is a talented international at a career pivot, carrying both the scars of the last few years and the upside that once made him one of Europe’s most talked-about prospects.
