That is the view of Ruud Gullit, who believes Manchester United’s returning forward could prove the “best signing” of the window after a transformative year on loan at Barcelona.

Twelve months ago, Rashford’s United story looked finished. Shipped out to Barcelona on loan, with a £26 million option to buy, the move was widely seen as a soft goodbye rather than a fresh start.

“Marcus Rashford could end up being the best signing,” the former Chelsea manager said. “He learned a lot at Barcelona and played much better, with far more freedom, than he ever did at Manchester United.

“Was that his fault, or was it down to the environment at the club? It’s very easy to point fingers at the player. But if he performs well elsewhere, it suggests something was wrong in his previous environment.

“So that could prove to be a fantastic move, for Manchester United if he stays, and performs like he did at Barcelona.”

“And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back. He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”

Rashford watched from the sidelines during the recent friendly against Leeds, but he is expected to travel for United’s final pre-season fixture against AC Milan. That trip will offer the first real glimpse of how Barcelona has changed him – and how Carrick plans to use him.

A crucial contract window and a changed reality

The timing could hardly be more important for the player. Rashford has entered the final two years of the lucrative deal he signed in 2023, worth around £325,000 per week. Those numbers demand production. They also narrow the margin for another misstep.

Not long ago, Rashford was understood to favour a clean break, a permanent move away from Old Trafford to continue the revival he had sparked in La Liga. That option never properly materialised. The lack of a suitable offer has forced a reset in thinking, on both sides.

Now the equation is simple. If Rashford carries over the physical sharpness and mental clarity he showed in Spain, he can give United exactly what they often lacked last season: a ruthless, clinical edge in the final third.

If he does that in red rather than in blaugrana, Gullit’s prediction will feel less like a bold claim and more like an obvious truth – that the most significant signing of United’s summer was the one already on their books.
