What Could Happen If Barcelona or Real Madrid Pursue Erling Haaland? Insights from Former Man City Star

Dietmar Hamann told GOAL there is “always a chance” that Erling Haaland might leave Manchester City if clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid come calling. Although no formal offers have arrived yet, Haaland’s contract runs until 2034, leaving open the possibility that he could consider a fresh start away from the Etihad Stadium one day.

Haaland’s Impact at Manchester City

Following in his father Alf Inge’s footsteps, Haaland joined City in the summer of 2022. At that time, he was among the most sought-after players worldwide, with Pep Guardiola securing his signature on a £51 million ($69m) deal—a bargain compared to today’s nine-figure transfers. His debut season was exceptional, scoring 52 goals and helping City win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble.

Since then, Haaland has smashed records, quickly reaching 100 top-flight English goals. He secured long-term personal terms, but that doesn’t guarantee he will see out the entire contract.

Will Spain Lure Haaland Away?

Talks about Spanish interest persist, especially as Haaland will turn 27 next summer after completing five seasons with City. There could be temptation to explore new challenges at Camp Nou or Santiago Bernabeu.

“Well, he’s won it all, hasn’t he? He won the Champions League, the Premier League, and he’s signed a very long contract,” said Hamann. “It’s not just down to him whether he leaves or can leave. But when you’ve been at a club for some time and achieved everything, it’s natural to consider other options. Since his father played in the Premier League, Haaland is even born in England. I think there might be a time when Barcelona or Madrid call, and yeah, there’s always a chance. But if City says no, with the contract he has, it might be tricky because he won't come cheap.”

Leadership Changes at Manchester City

For now, Haaland is focused on helping City, now under Pep Guardiola’s successor Enzo Maresca, compete for trophies. With experienced players like Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, and Ilkay Gundogan leaving, new leaders must emerge.

“When strong personalities leave, it opens chances for others to step up. Someone has to take the mantle after such success,” Hamann explained. “They still have Ruben Dias, the team leader, and Gianluigi Donnarumma, a young keeper with plenty of experience. Players like Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi are talented but need leadership. Bouaddi is new to the league and may take time to settle. The midfield is key to winning or losing games, so Dias and Donnarumma are crucial.”

Hamann also noted that Haaland might need to adopt a different role within the squad now. “In previous years, other players carried more responsibility, but that will change moving forward.”

Manchester City recently added Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea on transfer deadline day for £125 million ($169 million), making him one of British football’s most expensive signings.
