Hansi Flick's Countdown: 11 Days to Prepare Barcelona for La Liga

Hansi Flick’s first real test as FC Barcelona coach won’t come with a trophy on the line, but with a stopwatch. He has 11 days.

Because so many of Barça’s stars went deep at the World Cup, both the Catalans and fierce rivals Real Madrid will start the 2026/27 La Liga season a week later than most of the division. Everyone else gets going; the two giants wait.

Real Madrid head to Barcelona on August 22, but not to face Barça. Los Blancos open away at Espanyol. A day later, on August 23, Flick’s new-look side begin their league campaign on the road at Elche.

That short gap is Flick’s window. Roughly a week and a half to bring back the World Cup core, sharpen them, and stitch them into his ideas. Lamine Yamal, Pedri and the rest of the returning internationals must go from post-tournament fatigue to league intensity in days, not weeks.

Some of Spain’s heroes are already well into that process.

Gavi's Return

Gavi was the first to report back. The midfielder started Spain’s opening 0–0 draw with Cabo Verde in Group H at the World Cup, only to lose his place on the left wing to Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena for the remainder of the tournament. As his international minutes dried up, his club workload ramped up. He has been back at the training ground the longest, setting the early tone.

Next Wave of Players

The next wave arrived on August 9. Eric Garcia and goalkeeper Joan Garcia checked in, joined by Anthony Gordon and Jules Kounde, both of whom went all the way to the semifinals in North America with England and France respectively.

Their World Cup ended in chaos rather than glory. Gordon and Kounde faced each other in a wild third-place playoff, a 10-goal thriller that England edged 6–4. Bukayo Saka stole the show with a hat-trick, a game that felt more like a summer exhibition than a consolation match, but the minutes were real and the fatigue is too.

Now those legs belong to Flick.

For Kounde, the challenge is sharper still. His place at right back is no longer guaranteed. Inside the club, there is growing belief in 2007 La Masia graduate Xavi Espart, who is pushing hard for that role this season. One misstep, one slow start after the World Cup, and the door swings open for the academy product.

So Flick’s countdown is about more than fitness. It is about decisions. Who is ready for Elche? Who needs to be protected after a heavy summer? Who keeps their spot, and who feels the breath of La Masia on their neck?
