Harry Kane's Remarkable Season and Golden Shoe Triumph
Harry Kane stood in Munich with a familiar trophy in his hands and a very clear target in his mind.
The Bayern Munich striker collected the European Golden Shoe for the second time on Wednesday, rewarded again for being the most prolific scorer across Europe’s top leagues last season. This one, he admitted, “tasted even better than the first”.
A season of staggering numbers
Kane’s first full campaign in Germany was not just good. It was the best of his career.
The 33-year-old hit 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches, a ruthless return that ranks as the third-highest tally in a single German top-flight season. Bayern wrapped up a domestic double, taking both league and cup, with Kane at the centre of it all.
His form didn’t dip when he pulled on an England shirt either. He scored six times at the World Cup, pushing his overall tally at the tournament to 14 and making him England’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer.
Add everything together and the scale of his year comes into focus: 73 goals for club and country across the season. No wonder he called it his “best season ever”.
Eyes on the Ballon d'Or
With the Golden Shoe secured again, Kane is now openly aiming at the sport’s most prestigious individual prize.
“Obviously, that's out of my control. I know, of course, there's going to be a lot of talk about it from now until October when it's announced,” he said, aware that the debate around the Ballon d'Or will only intensify in the coming weeks.
“Ultimately, I've done everything I can last season. It was my best season by far. I achieved a lot with the teams I was in.”
He has a strong case. Bayern reached the Champions League semi-finals, only edged out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. With England, he went deep into another major tournament, falling in an agonising 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The numbers, the trophies, the deep runs in the biggest competitions – his résumé for this year’s award is complete. Now he waits.
Joining elite Golden Shoe company
Kane’s second Golden Shoe also pushes him further into elite territory.
Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have lifted the award more often. Messi has six, all collected during his years at Barcelona. Ronaldo has four, three from his time at Real Madrid and one from his spell at Manchester United.
Kane now sits just behind that iconic duo in the all-time list, a marker of sustained excellence as much as a reward for a single season.
As for whether that should translate into a Ballon d'Or?
“That's for you guys to debate and fans to debate,” he said, leaving the argument to pundits and supporters. “That's what makes the Ballon d'Or so special as well. Many players have had great seasons.”
Future tied to Bayern?
While the awards and speculation swirl around him, Kane’s club future looks stable.
He confirmed on Monday that he is about to begin talks over extending his Bayern contract, which currently runs until 2027. For a striker chasing the Ballon d'Or and stacking up Golden Shoes, staying at the heart of a team built to win in Germany and in Europe might be exactly the platform he needs.
The trophies are coming. The goals are flowing. The question now is whether this remarkable season ends with his name on the game’s most glittering individual prize.
