Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool Future in Doubt: Valencia Move Looms

Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool career is edging towards the exit door, just days after he was left out of the matchday squad against Newcastle.

The 23-year-old, once viewed as a long-term piece of Liverpool’s future, has slipped into the shadows at Anfield. A bruising loan spell at Aston Villa last season stalled his momentum, and his return in the summer came with a question mark rather than a fanfare.

That question now has a clear answer.

Left out, left behind

When Andoni Iraola named his squad for the Newcastle game, Elliott’s omission said plenty. Youngsters Lewis Koumas and James McConnell both made the bench ahead of him, a blunt indication of where he now sits in the pecking order.

Iraola did not hide from the decision.

“With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it’s a matter of finding the balance on the bench,” he explained before the Nottingham Forest match.

“In Harvey’s case, he’s trying, he’s improving every week, but I still prefer other options.

“Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad.

“But it’s another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality.”

The message was polite, but ruthless. Elliott is working, improving, pushing – yet others are now ahead of him.

Valencia move gathering pace

Away from the pitch, the situation has accelerated. Elliott has agreed personal terms with Valencia after positive talks, according to widespread reports. The only real uncertainty is the structure of the deal: another loan, or a permanent break.

With just 12 months left on his Liverpool contract, a full transfer looks the logical outcome. Liverpool face a straight choice – cash in now or risk losing him for nothing.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Valencia have opened negotiations with Liverpool as they look to strike a club-to-club agreement. The Spanish side want to move quickly; Liverpool know the clock is ticking.

Squeezed out at Anfield

Elliott’s slide down the hierarchy has been shaped by recruitment as much as form. The arrival of Florian Wirtz last summer pushed him further away from the central attacking roles he once targeted. Any lingering hope of carving out minutes on the wing has effectively disappeared with Bradley Barcola on his way.

Where there was once a pathway, there is now a traffic jam.
