Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano

Hull City have torn up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further year, becoming the most expensive player in the club’s history. The fee remains officially undisclosed, but Hull confirmed it surpasses the £20m plus add-ons paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.

That figure had only just set a new benchmark, eclipsing the £13m spent on Ryan Mason from Tottenham back in 2016. Hull have now broken their transfer record twice in the space of a single window, and this time for a defender they clearly see as a cornerstone.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” Mendy said after completing the move. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Mendy arrives with a growing reputation from Spain. After starting his career at Paris FC, he made his name in La Liga, scoring twice in 28 games during his only season with Rayo Vallecano. His final outing for the club came on a major stage: the Conference League final, where Rayo fell to Crystal Palace.

That was not his first taste of that competition’s showpiece either. The previous year he also reached the Conference League final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea. Two consecutive European finals, no winner’s medal, but a clear sign of a player comfortable under pressure.

On the international scene, Mendy’s rise has already taken him into the Senegal setup. He earned his first cap in March, featuring against The Gambia.

Now comes the biggest step. A record fee, a long contract, and the Premier League stage he has chased since childhood. Hull have made their bet on Mendy. The next question is how quickly he turns that investment into authority at the heart of their defence.
