Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy

Hull City have ripped up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with the option of a further year, becoming the most expensive player in the club’s history. Hull have not disclosed the fee, but confirmed it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons they paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.

That means Hull have broken their transfer record twice in the space of a few weeks. The previous benchmark had stood since 2016, when they spent £13m to bring Ryan Mason in from Tottenham.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” the Senegal international said after completing the move. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Career Overview

Mendy arrives with a growing reputation after a standout year in Spain. He began his career at Paris FC before moving to La Liga, where he spent last season with Rayo Vallecano, scoring twice in 28 appearances in his only campaign with the club.

His final game for Rayo came on one of the biggest stages of his career so far: the Conference League final, where they were beaten by Crystal Palace. It was the second consecutive year he had reached the showpiece of that competition, having also made the final the previous season with Real Betis, who lost to Chelsea.

International Experience

On the international stage, Mendy made his senior debut for Senegal in March, winning his first cap against The Gambia.
