Igor Matanovic Addresses Transfer Rumours Linking Him to Manchester United and Tottenham
Igor Matanovic, the Freiburg striker making waves in the Bundesliga, has spoken out about rumours connecting him to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Despite an impressive start to the season, Matanovic insists his attention is fully on performing for his current club under coach Julian Schuster.
Interest from Premier League Giants
Both Manchester United and Tottenham are reported to be considering moves to sign the 23-year-old attacker. United, in particular, are looking for a replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, who has been linked with Fiorentina. However, Matanovic firmly denies any negotiations or contacts with either club.
Matanovic Sets the Record Straight
Following his latest goal against Werder Bremen, the towering forward made it clear that transfer talk is distracting from his focus. "As far as I’m concerned, I’m currently at Freiburg," he told reporters. "There has been absolutely no contact with anyone from my side." Standing at 6ft 5in, he credits his recent scoring run not just to physical training but also mental clarity.
"Football is much more a mental game. If you’re clear-headed, not overthinking, and not hesitating, then that’s how things happen. If I’m overthinking, starting to brood, and lacking self-confidence, then it doesn’t work," Matanovic explained.
A Breakthrough Season So Far
Since moving from Eintracht Frankfurt to Freiburg last summer, Matanovic's profile has risen sharply. He scored 15 goals in all competitions during his first season and helped Freiburg reach the Europa League final, where they lost to Aston Villa. Reflecting on his decision to join Freiburg, Matanovic said, "Yes, of course. It was a huge step. Thanks to Freiburg, I also made it to the World Cup, which was a tremendous success for me as a young player." His performances earned him a place in Croatia's squad for the summer tournament, where he gained valuable international experience despite not scoring.
Transfer Deadline Approaches
With a contract running until June 2029, Freiburg have no urgent need to sell their star striker. Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur face a race against time to make a formal offer before the transfer window closes on Tuesday. Without a compelling bid, Matanovic looks set to continue leading Freiburg's attack and building on his early-season form.
