Ismail Kartal Stays as Fenerbahce Coach After Resignation Drama

Ismail Kartal is still Fenerbahce head coach. The club made it official on Friday night, ending 24 hours of chaos that began with his shock resignation after the 1-1 draw with Roma.

The statement from the hierarchy confirmed Kartal would continue in charge of the first team. Any lingering doubt vanished on Saturday morning when the club’s social media channels pushed out images of the 62-year-old back on the grass, directing first-team training as if nothing had happened. The message was clear: crisis talks with club official Oguz Cetin had not collapsed, and the coach was back in the saddle.

The twist came after an emotional outburst on Thursday. Speaking to Anadolu Agency in the immediate aftermath of the Champions League stalemate, Kartal stunned Turkish football by announcing he was walking away.

“First of all, I congratulate my players for carrying out the tasks I assigned for tonight's match to the letter. We played football worthy of the Champions League. We could have won the match; we had clear chances. The match ended in a draw, and I am proud of my players. Tonight, I am resigning from my position - never to return. I extend my heartfelt thanks to my players," he said.

Those words sounded final. They were not.

Aziz Yildirim moves fast

Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim refused to let the situation spiral. Within hours, he faced the media at a separate press conference and publicly rejected Kartal’s resignation.

Yildirim pointed directly at the atmosphere around the club, highlighting the treatment the coach had received from a section of the supporters and online critics. According to the president, that hostility pushed Kartal to breaking point.

"You saw the state Ismail was in. Can a person endure that much distress? They threw a water bottle at Ismail Kartal's head. We saw it. That is why he is upset. Ismail Kartal remains in his post. I said [to Kartal]: 'You will continue,' and that was that," Yildirim declared.

The president’s intervention drew a line under the resignation drama and reasserted the club’s backing for a coach who had just taken a point off Roma in Europe, yet still finds himself under intense scrutiny at home.

Super Lig pressure returns

Now the noise around his future gives way to a more familiar sound: pressure from the league table.

Fenerbahce host Gaziantep FK on Monday night in the Super Lig, and the stakes are blunt. Kartal’s team sit 11th in an 18-club division, a position that jars with the expectations of a fanbase accustomed to title races, not mid-table frustration.
