Ismail Kartal Quits Fenerbahce Only to Stay

Turkish football delivered another surreal night on Thursday as Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal dramatically announced his resignation – only for the club president to insist minutes later that he remained in charge.

The 65-year-old stunned the post-match press conference after a 1-1 home draw with Roma in the Champions League, declaring he was leaving Fenerbahce “never to return”. He framed it as a sacrifice, saying he was stepping aside “to clear the way for the club”.

The room froze. A routine debrief on a European stalemate had instantly turned into a bombshell.

The shock did not last long. Out in the mixed zone, president Aziz Yildirim quickly moved to douse the flames. Kartal, he said, “continues in his role” with the Turkish side.

Yildirim pointed to the ugly scenes during the game, when some fans threw a bottle at Kartal. “Some fans threw a bottle at the coach’s head this evening during the game. He is upset about it,” the president explained, suggesting emotion rather than long-term intent lay behind the coach’s words.

So, within the space of a few chaotic minutes, Fenerbahce had a coach who had quit, and a president who refused to accept the resignation. Classic Istanbul drama. And with the Champions League campaign still in its early stages, the question now is not whether Kartal has walked away, but how long this uneasy truce can really hold.
