Ismaila Sarr's Agent Accuses Clubs of Treating African Players as Commodities

Ismaila Sarr’s agent has gone public after Liverpool’s late move for the Crystal Palace winger collapsed, using a powerful statement to accuse clubs of treating African players like “commodities”.

Liverpool, fresh from landing Victor Munoz and sealing a huge £123million deal for Bradley Barcola, pushed hard to add a third winger before the transfer window shut. Sarr emerged as a serious option, with the Anfield hierarchy holding several rounds of talks over the Senegal international, as well as Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh.

The Reds lodged a £40m bid for Sarr. Reports from Fabrizio Romano suggested Liverpool even went as high as £50m, but other sources denied that figure. What is clear is that negotiations hit a wall. Palace set the 26-year-old’s valuation at above £50m and made it clear they would not sanction a late sale.

With the clock ticking, Liverpool walked away.

At the same time, another of Diomansy Kamara’s clients saw a major move fall apart. Lamine Camara’s proposed £47m transfer to Chelsea collapsed at the last moment when Monaco pulled the plug on the midfielder’s sale.

Those two failed deals prompted Kamara to break his silence.

Kamara: ‘Our African players deserve respect’

Posting a lengthy message on social media, Kamara used the Sarr and Camara sagas to launch a wider attack on how African players are handled in the market.

“The cases of Ismaïla Sarr and Lamine Camara must all interrogate us,” he wrote.

“We have to get out of this logic where the African player can sometimes give the feeling that he is just a commodity: you buy it, you set its price, you negotiate its future and, too often, your will seems to go to the background.

“Our African players deserve respect. The respect of their work. The respect of their career. Respecting their ambitions. The respect of their voices.

“A transfer shouldn’t just be a matter of two clubs and numbers. Behind every contract, there’s a man, a career, dreams and life choices.

“The fact that clubs can sometimes have the final word is a reality of professional football.

“But one question remains: what about the career and the will of the player? The player must be able to be heard and respected in the decisions that determine his future.

“Let’s never forget what’s important: behind every success, it’s the players who write history first.”

The statement landed at a time when Sarr’s future was already under the microscope. Manchester United and Galatasaray had both explored a move earlier in the window, while the winger himself deleted all Palace-related posts from his Instagram account as he tried to push through a summer switch.

United never turned their interest into a formal push. Galatasaray did, but their bids fell well short of the £50m mark and failed to tempt Palace into doing business.

Liverpool miss out on Minteh as well

Sarr was not the only wide option to slip away from Liverpool.

The club also went hard for Yankuba Minteh, only to be rebuffed by Brighton. Verbal offers worth £50m and £60m were turned down, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side holding firm. Andoni Iraola’s team considered raising their proposal to somewhere between £65m and £70m, but Brighton’s £80m valuation effectively ended the chase.

So Liverpool end the window with Barcola as their marquee attacking arrival, a signing that has genuinely excited the fanbase. Yet the mood is not entirely celebratory.

Supporters have been left uneasy by the failure to land a third winger and the lack of reinforcements at right-back and in central midfield. In a season where the margins at the top are razor-thin, Liverpool’s gamble on what they already have will be tested quickly.
