Italy vs Brazil for Samuele Inacio: A Teenage Football Battle

Italy are preparing to move fast to secure one of their most exciting young prospects, with 18-year-old forward Samuele Inacio at the centre of a growing international battle with Brazil.

Reports on Thursday claim the Azzurri are considering calling up the Borussia Dortmund talent for September’s fixtures and, crucially, handing him a competitive debut. The intention is clear: lock in his international future before Brazil make their move.

Dual-national gem in demand

Inacio has been a standout in Italy’s youth ranks, but his story stretches across two footballing cultures. Born in Bergamo to an Italian mother and a Brazilian father, Pia – a former forward who played for Atalanta, Napoli and several other Italian clubs – he qualifies for both national teams.

That mix has now turned into a full-blown tug-of-war.

The teenager left Atalanta for Borussia Dortmund as a youngster, continuing his development in Germany’s talent factory. His progress has not gone unnoticed in Coverciano. Interim Italy coach Silvio Baldini already handed him a first senior cap in June, when Inacio featured in a friendly against Luxembourg.

That appearance, though, came with an asterisk. Because it was only a friendly, Inacio remains free to choose between Italy and Brazil for competitive football.

Brazil step up their interest

The Selecao have not stayed on the sidelines. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Brazil sent scouts to London to watch Inacio in Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Cup.

On August 9 at Emirates Stadium, the 18-year-old lined up for Dortmund in the friendly against Arsenal, with Brazil’s observers in the stands taking notes. Their mission was straightforward: assess whether he is ready to be fast-tracked into their senior setup.

Reports suggest Brazil are seriously considering capping him in an official match to secure his allegiance for the long term. One competitive appearance would be enough to tie him down.

Italy ready to act

Italy, though, still hold the inside track. Thursday’s reports state that Inacio’s priority remains with the Azzurri, and the federation is fully aware of the urgency of the situation.

The plan, according to Di Marzio, is to get him on the pitch in a competitive fixture as soon as possible – potentially as early as September. A few minutes in an official match could decide the international future of a player many in Italy view as a key piece of the next generation.
