Ivan Fresneda’s name is back on Arsenal lips again. Same player, same admiration, very different numbers.

Reports from Portugal have revived the link between the Sporting CP right-back and the north London club, with Record highlighting an €80 million release clause written into his deal in Lisbon. For a 21-year-old who once looked close to joining Arsenal for a fraction of that figure, it is a twist that demands a closer look.

A pursuit that never quite happened

Arsenal’s interest in Fresneda is not new, not sudden, and certainly not manufactured for this window. The club have tracked him for years, going back to his teenage days at Real Valladolid.

At 17, he was already being spoken of as a serious target. The proposed deal back then was understood to be in the region of €15 million, with a €30 million release clause hanging over any negotiation. It felt ambitious but realistic for a highly rated prospect in Spain.

When the January 2023 window opened, the story accelerated. Fresneda’s representatives travelled to London, fuelling a sense that Arsenal were ready to move. Reports suggested an agreement was close. The timing, the need, the profile – it all seemed to line up.

Then it stalled. Any move was pushed back to the summer. The interest didn’t die, but the momentum did.

Fresneda, for his part, did little to cool the speculation. He spoke openly of his admiration for Mikel Arteta and admitted he felt “proud” to be linked with Arsenal. He even began learning English, a detail that only intensified the feeling that his future might lie in the Premier League.

And yet, when the moment came, he went elsewhere.

A bargain move, then a giant clause

Despite Arsenal reportedly tabling a lucrative offer in that 2023 summer window, Fresneda left Real Valladolid for Sporting in a deal worth just €9 million. For a player so heavily courted, the fee looked like a bargain.

In Portugal, Sporting moved quickly to protect their asset. Fresneda signed a contract running to June 2028, with a release clause set at €80 million. It is a classic Sporting stance: buy smart, protect aggressively, sell only on their terms.

Since that move, the noise around Arsenal and Fresneda has largely faded into the background. He has continued his development in Lisbon, while Arsenal reshaped their defence and pushed on in the Premier League and Europe.

Now the link has resurfaced. Record notes that Fresneda is being “pointed out as a possible reinforcement of Arsenal and Newcastle”, a line that will not go unnoticed in north London or the northeast.

Genuine admiration, unrealistic price?

There are two clear strands to this story.

First, the admiration is real. Arsenal have liked Fresneda for a long time. His profile fits the modern full-back brief: young, technically sound, comfortable in possession, and tactically flexible. Right-back has been a problem position at times for Arteta, with injuries and role changes forcing constant adjustments across the back line.

Second, the price being floated is another matter entirely.

With two years still to run on his current Sporting deal, talk of interest from England arrives at a convenient moment for the player and his club. It is entirely plausible that such rumours strengthen Fresneda’s hand in any discussions over improved terms in Lisbon.

But the €80 million clause? That is where belief starts to strain.

Arsenal may well continue to monitor Fresneda, as they have done for years. They may still see him as a potential long-term solution on that right side. Yet paying anything close to €80 million for a full-back this summer would represent a huge departure from the club’s current squad-building logic.

Arteta and Edu are expected to commit serious resources to attacking and midfield reinforcements. The idea of dropping a record-level fee on a right-back – even one they admire – feels wildly out of step with those priorities.

So the saga circles back to a familiar place. Arsenal like Ivan Fresneda. Ivan Fresneda likes the idea of Arsenal. Sporting like his €80 million clause.

Something will have to give.
