Jadon Sancho: Potential Return to Borussia Dortmund

Jadon Sancho is edging towards a move back to the continent, with the free agent understood to favour a return abroad despite concrete interest from several Premier League clubs.

Six weeks on from the expiry of his Manchester United contract, the 26-year-old is weighing up his next step after a turbulent few years that have taken him from Dortmund to Old Trafford, via Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Dortmund circle again

Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs keen to bring him back. Sancho has already played 158 times for the Bundesliga side across two spells, and the lure of a familiar environment, regular football and Champions League nights is hard to ignore at this stage of his career.

United paid £73m to prise him away from Dortmund in 2021, but the move never truly ignited. Now, with no transfer fee attached, the winger’s camp is listening to offers from across Europe while keeping an open mind about all possibilities, including England, even if his preference lies elsewhere.

Loan years and mixed fortunes

Sancho’s recent seasons have been nomadic.

He spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Aston Villa, making 39 appearances as Unai Emery’s side surged into the Champions League and lifted the Europa League. Sancho featured as a late substitute in the victory over Freiburg, his third European final in as many seasons, underlining his knack for reaching the sharp end of continental competition.

The following year brought another temporary move, this time to Chelsea for the 2024-25 season. He played 41 times for the west London club under a deal that initially included an obligation to buy. Chelsea, though, chose to pay a £5m penalty rather than trigger the permanent transfer, sending him back to Manchester United and effectively resetting his future.

United then let his contract run down, releasing him at the end of the season.

Staying ready in unlikely surroundings

With negotiations ongoing and suitors circling, Sancho has been keeping himself fit in low-key surroundings. He has been training with non-league side Flixton, a far cry from the Champions League stages he has grown used to, but a clear sign he intends to hit the ground running wherever he lands next.

Premier League sides remain on the phone. Dortmund and other European clubs are watching closely.
