Jake O'Brien Faces Exit as Everton Weighs £20m Offer

With the window ticking into its final days, Jake O'Brien has gone from Everton cornerstone-in-waiting to one of the most intriguing names on the market.

Twelve months ago, the Cork defender looked nailed on as part of the club’s long-term plan. He was a mainstay at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last season, trusted, durable, and often excellent. Just not in the position he actually wants.

O'Brien sees himself as a centre back. David Moyes largely saw a right back.

While James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite locked down the central roles, O'Brien was pushed almost exclusively to the right, filling a problem slot with such consistency that he became Everton’s first-choice option there. He did the job, and did it well, but it has left him at a crossroads.

Now, with less than a week to go in the window, both club and player are understood to be open to a parting of ways if the right offer lands.

Premier League interest builds

The market has reacted quickly. O'Brien is drawing interest from both English and European clubs, but the money and urgency point towards a Premier League move as the most realistic outcome.

Leeds United have joined the chase, according to Football Insider, as they look to reinforce their defensive line with a player who can operate across the back four. Crystal Palace, his former club, are also thought to be keen on bringing him back, sensing an opportunity to reclaim a defender they know well.

Everton, though, are not in a position to simply cash in and move on. Any sale is expected to hinge on them signing a right back before the deadline. They have been searching that market for months, a search sharpened by the summer departure of Seamus Coleman.

At the weekend, Merlin Röhl started at right back in the win over Crystal Palace. He did a job, but like O'Brien at centre half, it is not his natural home. The balance of the back line still feels temporary.

That is the dilemma. Selling O'Brien without a replacement would not just weaken them at right back, it would also leave them light at centre back, where only three other senior options are currently in the squad.

Player wants minutes, clubs smell opportunity

From O'Brien’s perspective, the picture is clear. He wants regular football in his preferred role. On Merseyside, that looks a tough ask in the coming months.

He is behind Tarkowski and Branthwaite in the pecking order centrally, while Everton are actively looking to recruit over him at right back. For a 24-year-old entering a key phase of his career, that combination is hardly encouraging.

No surprise, then, that the suitors are lining up.

Leeds and Crystal Palace are not alone. Sunderland have also been credited with an interest, giving O'Brien a spread of options across the top two tiers in England. For a defender who proved he can handle the Premier League tempo out of position, the chance to step into a central role elsewhere will be tempting.

The numbers are already being discussed. A fee in the region of £20million is thought to be enough to secure his signature. That figure reflects both his age and his versatility, but it also underlines Everton’s need to protect their squad depth before signing off on any deal.

So the situation is set: a defender who wants to play centre back, a club that used him at right back, three serious suitors, and a ticking clock.
