Jamal Musiala's Health Scare: Diagnosis and Future Outlook
Jamal Musiala’s latest scare did not come from a crunching tackle or a wild challenge. It came in a quiet, chilling moment on a summer evening in a friendly.
The Bayern Munich playmaker collapsed on the pitch for the second time in four days during a warm-up win over Heidenheim, sending a jolt of anxiety through the club and its supporters. The 23-year-old looked dazed, required on-field treatment and had to be helped off – an unsettling repeat of a similar episode against RB Leipzig earlier in the week.
This was no routine knock. This was something different.
Diagnosis brings clarity – and a path forward
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl moved quickly to stress that the club is fully on top of the situation and standing firmly behind its No. 10. Musiala then addressed the issue himself, revealing he has been diagnosed with temporary, brief absence seizures linked to a neurological dysfunction.
To understand what that means in football terms, German outlet BILD turned to Prof. Christoph Kleinschnitz, head of neurology at the University Hospital Essen. His assessment underlined both the seriousness and the manageability of the condition.
“From a neurological perspective, this could potentially be an epileptic seizure. It could be a form of absence epilepsy, as symptoms such as brief periods of unresponsiveness are consistent with it,” he explained.
The caveat was clear: a final classification depends on the full set of neurological findings. But the message that followed will have eased nerves in Munich.
According to Prof. Kleinschnitz, the condition is highly treatable, though it demands long-term therapy. Crucially, he stated that Musiala can continue playing football.
Another hurdle after brutal injury lay-off
For Musiala, this comes on top of a brutal spell that has already tested his resilience. His rise had been interrupted by a major orthopaedic setback: a fractured fibula combined with a dislocated and broken ankle suffered during the Club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, an injury that cost him a large part of the 2025-26 season.
He has spent months rebuilding his body, step by painstaking step, trying to regain rhythm and sharpness after that double blow. Just as he was looking to gather momentum again, these neurological episodes arrived.
Now the task is twofold. Musiala must balance the final stages of his recovery from those serious leg injuries with the careful, long-term management of his newly diagnosed condition. The medical priority is clear: stabilise, monitor, and protect.
Specialists, though, are optimistic. With proper treatment and consistent care, the expectation is that this will not derail his professional career.
Bayern’s plans – and the season ahead
Inside Säbener Straße, the planning does not stop. Bayern want their creative heartbeat fully available as they chase trophies on multiple fronts in the coming campaign. Every tactical blueprint for the season is sharper with Musiala on the pitch, drifting between the lines, deciding games.
For now, the timeline sits in the hands of doctors. Musiala is receiving top-level care and has spoken of feeling positive about his daily routine and treatment. The club, his family and his close circle are wrapped tightly around him as he navigates the next steps.
Bayern will not rush him. Nor will they pretend this is just another minor issue.
When the medical staff finally give the all-clear, the Allianz Arena will expect to see the same fearless No. 10 back at full tilt. The real question is not whether Jamal Musiala will play again – experts say he will – but how high his ceiling can still climb after everything his young career has already had to withstand.
