James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton from West Ham

James Ward-Prowse is back where it all began. Southampton have re-signed their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United, sealing a deal worth just under £1m for one of the club’s modern greats.

The 31-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract at St Mary’s, closing a circle that started when he first walked into the academy as an eight-year-old.

“It feels a bit surreal,” Ward-Prowse said. The move has come together quickly, and he admitted the last few days have been “pretty intense”, but the emotion was clear: “I’m delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.”

A homegrown heartbeat returns

Ward-Prowse left Southampton in 2023 for West Ham, ending a long association that had seen him make 410 first-team appearances. His time in east London brought 75 games for the Hammers, but his journey there was anything but straightforward.

He spent loan spells at Nottingham Forest and, most recently, Burnley, where he played 14 times last season. Now he comes back to a club and a city he never really let go of.

“It’s the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight,” he said. “It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be. I’m here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

A set-piece specialist with unfinished business

Ward-Prowse’s numbers at Southampton underline his status. He scored 55 goals and provided 52 assists in his first spell with the club, many of them forged from that familiar, whip-cracked right foot.

Seventeen of those goals came from direct free-kicks in the Premier League, leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s all-time top-flight record of 18. That pursuit now resumes back on the south coast, with Saints fans knowing that every dead ball around the box could drag him level with, and then beyond, one of English football’s most iconic names.

On the international stage, Ward-Prowse has 11 England caps and two goals, recognition for a career built on consistency, delivery and relentless work.

Now he returns not as the academy hopeful or the young captain, but as a seasoned midfielder with something still to prove — to himself, to the league, and to the club he calls home.
