Jim McGuinness Extends Tenure as Donegal Senior Football Manager for 2027

Jim McGuinness will remain in charge of the Donegal senior footballers for the 2027 season, extending one of the county’s most influential managerial reigns into a fourth year of his second spell.

Donegal GAA confirmed the decision on Monday evening, also announcing that Mickey McCann will stay on as senior hurling manager for another two years, continuing a tenure that began in 2018.

“Following a meeting of the County Committee, Donegal confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling Manager for a two year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football manager for a one year term,” the statement read.

McGuinness’s return has already reshaped Donegal’s trajectory. Since coming back on a three-year deal with an option of a fourth, the 53-year-old has delivered back-to-back Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025 and guided the county to an All-Ireland final appearance in 2025.

Earlier this year, Donegal added more silverware under his watch with a Football League Division One final victory over Kerry in March, a result that underlined their capacity to mix it with the elite.

The summer, though, stung. Donegal’s championship campaign unravelled quickly: beaten by Down in the quarter-finals of the Ulster SFC, then edged out by Dublin after extra-time in Round 3 of the All-Ireland series.

For McGuinness, who famously led Donegal to All-Ireland glory in 2012 during his first spell, the extension now sets up a pivotal 2027. The structures are in place, the standards are set. The question is simple: can he turn promise and patches of brilliance back into September days that define an era?
