JJ Gabriel Moves Closer to Barcelona as Manchester United Faces Talent Loss

JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona with his representatives as talks intensify over a move that could see one of Manchester United’s brightest academy prospects walk away from Old Trafford before his 16th birthday.

The 15-year-old forward, already on the radar of Europe’s elite, has formally asked to leave United and be de-registered from the club’s system. That request went in straight after he hit a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Sabah in the UEFA Youth League last Thursday – a performance that underlined exactly why so many clubs are circling.

Barcelona are not alone. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and several Premier League sides are all monitoring the situation, aware that a rare opportunity may be opening up.

United, though, are not giving up. The club’s hierarchy remain hopeful they can convince Gabriel to stay, at least until his contract runs to the end of the season. But with every day that passes, the sense grows that the teenager is moving closer to the exit.

Since that Youth League tie, Gabriel has not trained with United. On Friday, when England’s latest youth squads were announced, his name was missing too, despite him having represented England most recently at U17 level. It added another layer of intrigue to an already delicate story.

The mechanics of any move are complicated. There is a belief, based on an existing FIFA precedent and a loophole in the regulations, that Gabriel could join a European club once he turns 16 on October 6, provided he secures a European passport through one of his parents. Any transfer, though, would still require FIFA approval, so nothing is guaranteed.

On the football side, United head coach Michael Carrick chose his words carefully when asked about the youngster on Friday.

“I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here,” Carrick said. “I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you've got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything, so the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing.”

Carrick’s message was clear: behind the noise, there is a teenager whose welfare has to come first.

Outside the club, the reaction is more blunt. Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson did not hide the scale of the potential loss.

“First of all, he's an unbelievable talent,” Merson said. “The problem now is with the lad and probably his agents and his family – I don't know him so I'm only thinking from the outside.

“When you're watching Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting given a chance at Liverpool and doing very well, he's probably thinking, 'I should be playing at Man Utd now as well'.”

That is the tension running through the modern academy game. The best kids see their peers breaking through at 16 and 17 and want the same. Patience is in short supply, ambition is not.

“This is the problem you're going to have with the kids of this day and age,” Merson added. “They're so talented that they want to play straight away. When I was playing, it was unheard of at 16.

“It'll be a massive blow for Man Utd. Believe me, this kid is an unbelievable talent. They'll have every club in the world wanting him.”

United know that already. Barcelona know it too. The question now is whether Old Trafford can still be sold to Gabriel as the place where that talent should explode, or whether his future will be written in Catalonia – or somewhere else on the continent – before he has even turned 16.
