JJ Gabriel’s future is moving fast. Faster, perhaps, than any 15-year-old’s career should.

The Manchester United forward, one of the brightest prospects in their academy, has travelled to Barcelona as a cluster of European giants jostle for position in the race to sign him.

Gabriel has informed United that he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect, a dramatic step that underlines how strained the situation has become behind the scenes.

He cannot play for another club in this season’s Youth League because of tournament rules. United remain his only eligible side in that competition, whether he wants to play for them or not.

Tensions rose when United left him out of the squad for their Champions League opener against Sabah FK, a game Michael Carrick’s side won 4-0. Sources close to Gabriel were furious at the decision, seeing it as a key moment in the breakdown between player and club.

Carrick treads carefully

Carrick, now managing United’s first team, faced more questions about Gabriel on Friday as he previewed Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Fulham. He chose his words carefully.

"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," he said.

"With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.

"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."

The message was clear: the club wants to dampen the noise around a teenager suddenly thrust into the glare of a full-blown transfer saga.
