JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and this time, it feels close to snapping.

The 15-year-old, one of the most talked‑about prospects in United’s academy, is in Barcelona for face‑to‑face talks with the Spanish champions, in what is being seen as the strongest sign yet that he has no intention of reversing his decision to leave Old Trafford.

United, though, are not giving up without a fight.

From concern to confrontation

Concerns inside United over keeping Gabriel were first laid bare on August 13, when TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed the club feared losing the teenager. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all already circling.

By mid-September, the situation had escalated. On September 15, it emerged that Gabriel had formally informed United he wanted out. Sources told TEAMtalk the attacking midfielder had sent an official notice asking for his academy registration to be cancelled with immediate effect.

If that request is eventually upheld, Gabriel would walk away as a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.

That birthday matters. Gabriel holds an Irish passport, opening the door to a move to an EU club once he hits 16, a route that has become far more attractive than trying to untangle his status in England.

Contract stand-off

Bailey set out the crux of the issue: Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 and will then be eligible to explore a move to an EU side such as Real Madrid or Barcelona. That possibility looms large because his position at United is tangled in red tape.

His academy registration at Old Trafford officially runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. Gabriel has asked for that registration to be cancelled, but United retain the right to challenge the request and have shown no willingness to simply wave him through the exit.

ESPN reported this week that United have no intention of cancelling the agreement currently in place. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has also stated that the club have been planning talks to persuade Gabriel to stay, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the attempts to keep him.

Barcelona move gathers pace

The teenager’s actions, though, are speaking louder than any planned meeting.

On Wednesday afternoon, Manchester Evening News Chief Manchester United Correspondent Tyrone Marshall revealed on X that Gabriel was in Barcelona for discussions over a move to the Nou Camp.

“JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc,” Marshall posted at 3:19pm on September 18.

Less than half an hour later, he doubled down: “JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc.”

Spanish outlet Marca, which leans towards Real Madrid, has also reported Gabriel’s presence in Barcelona, underlining how closely the situation is being watched across Spain. Journalist Ben Jacobs added further weight at 3:23pm, writing on X: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”

Madrid lurking, United braced

Real Madrid have not gone away. Earlier on Friday, Bailey reported that both Madrid and Barcelona had already held positive talks with Gabriel’s camp, with both giants prepared to move if the teenager successfully frees himself from his United ties.

The timing is crucial. October 6 is now a looming date in this saga. Once Gabriel turns 16, an EU move becomes a live option, though any transfer in defiance of United’s stance would need FIFA approval and could spark a legal and regulatory battle.

United intend to reject his de‑registration request. Gabriel is pushing to leave. Barcelona are talking. Real Madrid are waiting.
