Manchester United thought they were on the brink of making history with JJ Gabriel. Instead, they’ve been hit with a bombshell.

The 15-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in the academy, has asked to leave the club, casting serious doubt over a future that only days ago looked nailed to Old Trafford.

United had earmarked Gabriel for a place in the squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton. Had he featured, he would have become the youngest player ever to represent the club in a competitive game. Inside the club, there remains some optimism. Gabriel’s current deal runs until the summer, and he cannot be deregistered before then, giving United time to try to repair the relationship and convince him his pathway lies in Manchester.

They may need every day of that time. Barcelona are reported by the Daily Mail to be very interested in the teenager. Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which means that once he turns 16 he can move from the UK to play in Europe, making him an even more attractive proposition to clubs on the continent.

The timing could hardly be worse for United. Off the pitch, the story is an unwelcome distraction. On it, Gabriel has looked like the face of the next generation.

Adam Lawrence, United’s professional development phase lead, spoke glowingly about the youngster after that Youth League hat-trick, underlining just how invested the club is in his progress.

“JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through,” Lawrence said after the win over Sabah. “He’s been at the club for so long. He’s got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well.

“At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it’s about making sure that he’s getting the right exposure across different levels.

“We’re obviously not perfect but it’s definitely something we put a lot of thought into, so it’s good to see him enjoying his football in a good place.”

That “good place” suddenly feels far less secure.

Gabriel, the son of former St Patrick’s Athletic defender and Republic of Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill, does not turn 16 until October, yet his profile already stretches far beyond academy pitches. He has amassed 844,000 followers on Instagram, a remarkable number for a player who has not yet made a competitive senior appearance. Recently, the account was wiped of all posts, a move that will only fuel speculation over his next step.

Last season, Gabriel became the youngest ever winner of United’s prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, a prize that has previously signposted future first-team regulars. The club had hoped he would be the next in that line, breaking records in red rather than weighing up offers from abroad.

Now, with Barcelona circling and the clock ticking towards his 16th birthday, the question is brutally simple: can Manchester United convince one of their most exciting prospects that his future still lies where his story began?
