João Cancelo Joins Barcelona Permanently Until 2029

João Cancelo is back in Barcelona – this time to stay.

FC Barcelona have confirmed the Portuguese full-back has joined on a free transfer from Al-Hilal, signing a permanent deal at the club until June 30, 2029. After two influential loan spells, the on-off story between Cancelo and Barça finally has a long-term chapter.

The club’s statement was brief but decisive: an agreement with the player, a free-agent arrival, and a contract running to 2029. No fee, no loan clauses, no halfway house. Just a clean commitment.

The route back to Catalonia, though, was anything but simple. Cancelo revealed he had to sacrifice part of his salary to cut ties with the Saudi Pro League side and force through the move he wanted.

“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” he said.

The choice was stark, and he didn’t hide it.

“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”

This is not the loan mercenary of old. At 32, Cancelo arrives as a senior piece in Hansi Flick’s puzzle, expected to start the season as first choice on the left side of defence. Alejandro Balde, the academy jewel, will be the one pushing him, turning that flank into one of the most fiercely contested positions in the squad.

Cancelo knows the dressing room, the pressure, the demands. Barcelona know exactly what kind of full-back they’re getting: aggressive on the ball, relentless in attack, and comfortable drifting into midfield to dictate play.

The reunion is complete. Now comes the real question: how far can this version of Cancelo, tied down until 2029, help drive Barça back to the top?
