Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Permanent Deal
Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona – this time for good.
The Portugal full-back has signed a three-year deal at Camp Nou after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, ending a brief and curious chapter in Saudi Arabia and returning to the club where he helped deliver the La Liga title last season.
"It's my dream," Cancelo said. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."
For Barcelona, it is the completion of a pursuit that has stretched across several windows. For Cancelo, it feels like a circle finally closed.
A long road back to Spain
Cancelo’s relationship with Spanish football began a decade ago. In 2014 he arrived at Valencia from Benfica, initially on loan, and quickly showed the attacking instincts that would define his career at right-back.
From there, the journey turned into a tour of Europe’s elite. A loan spell at Inter Milan in 2017-18, a permanent move to Juventus in 2018, then a high-profile switch to Manchester City in 2019. He won titles, collected experience, and kept moving.
By the end of the 2022-23 season he was on loan at Bayern Munich, another short stop in a restless career. Then came Barcelona.
City sent him to Camp Nou on a season-long loan for 2023-24, and Cancelo slotted straight into Xavi’s side, offering width, control and a constant outlet down the flank. Barca went on to secure the La Liga title, and the club’s hierarchy never hid their desire to keep him.
Instead, Cancelo made a surprising detour. He left City permanently in 2024 for Al-Hilal on a three-year contract in the Saudi Pro League. The stay did not last a full season. Once his deal there was terminated by mutual agreement, the 32-year-old became a free agent this summer – and Barcelona moved quickly.
Now he returns for a third stint in blaugrana colours, but for the first time as a permanent signing.
Barca reshape with familiar faces
Cancelo’s arrival is part of a broader rebuild built on players who already know the club’s demands.
Earlier this week, Barcelona also completed the signing of his former Manchester City team-mate Rodri, agreeing a fee of about £65m for the Spain midfielder. The pair reunite in a dressing room that suddenly has a strong Manchester accent and a very clear ambition.
Cancelo has his dream move. Barcelona have their attacking full-back locked in. The question now is simple: how far can this new core, forged in Manchester and reborn in Catalonia, take them?
