Joao Gomes Joins Aston Villa in £38m Move

Joao Gomes is set to swap a relegated Wolves for a resurgent Aston Villa in a £38m move that underlines just how aggressively Unai Emery plans to reshape his midfield.

The Brazil international has already left Wolves’ pre-season camp in Portugal and is due to undergo a medical on Thursday, with Villa agreeing an initial £34m fee plus £4m in add-ons. Once the formalities are complete, Emery will have the all-action midfielder he has been chasing since his engine room was ripped apart this summer.

Key Departures

Youri Tielemans has gone to Manchester United in a £35m deal. Amadou Onana, the powerful presence Villa hoped to build around, is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup. Two key pillars gone in quick succession. Villa had to act.

Gomes, 23, brings bite, energy and a relentless work rate. He made 41 appearances for Wolves last season in a campaign that ended with the club bottom of the Premier League, yet his reputation largely survived the wreckage. Across his time at Molineux, he played 130 games and scored seven goals after arriving from Flamengo in 2023, quickly becoming one of their few reliable performers in a bleak spell.

That consistency did not go unnoticed. Atletico Madrid tracked him and were keen, but never pushed a deal over the line. Villa did.

Emery's Vision

Emery wants intensity without the ball and bravery with it. Gomes fits that profile. He snaps into tackles, presses high and plays forward whenever he can. In a Villa side that expects to dominate more games than it did when it first emerged under Emery, his ability to cover ground and disrupt opponents should give licence to the more creative players ahead of him.

And Villa are not stopping there.

They are close to finalising a club-record move for Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, a deal expected to top £50m. Drop Gomes into a midfield that could soon include Manzambi, and the picture changes quickly: from patched-up and depleted to deep, athletic and expensive.

Wolves' Situation

For Wolves, this is another painful departure from a squad already stripped by relegation and financial reality. Losing a player who featured 41 times last season is not just about numbers; it is about losing one of the few players who could set the tempo in midfield. The fee helps the balance sheet. It does little for the mood.

Villa's Ambitions
