Joe Bursik Returns to AFC Wimbledon on Loan from Portsmouth

A familiar face is back between the posts at Plough Lane. AFC Wimbledon have brought in goalkeeper Joe Bursik on loan from Championship side Portsmouth for the rest of the season, handing the club’s academy a full-circle moment.

The 26-year-old is not just another signing. He first walked through Wimbledon’s doors as an eight-year-old, learning his trade in the club’s youth ranks before departing for Stoke City at 16. Now he returns as a seasoned professional, with experience across the Football League and a reputation as a capable shot-stopper.

Bursik’s breakthrough came at Stoke, where he impressed during the 2020-21 Championship campaign. He kept seven clean sheets in 16 league appearances for the Potters, a run that underlined his potential and pushed him into regular senior contention. That spell was followed by a series of loans that hardened him further: Telford, Accrington, Doncaster and Peterborough all benefited from his services as he gathered minutes and responsibility.

Portsmouth moved for him in September 2025, adding depth and competition to their goalkeeping department. Bursik has since made 10 league appearances for Pompey and featured in one of the club’s biggest fixtures of recent seasons, starting their FA Cup third-round tie against Arsenal at Fratton Park — a 4-1 defeat, but another high-profile stage on his journey.

Now that journey loops back to south-west London. For Wimbledon, it is a reunion with one of their own. For Bursik, it is a chance to turn childhood beginnings into something far more decisive in the club’s present.
