Joe Cole Backs Enzo Fernandez for Manchester City
Joe Cole has thrown his weight behind Manchester City’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez, insisting the Chelsea midfielder is the standout candidate to step into the void left by Rodri at the Etihad.
Rodri’s move to Barcelona has ripped out the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. City are scouring the market for reinforcements, and Cole is in no doubt about who should be at the top of their list.
“What a man to try and replace”
Speaking to Paddy Power, the former Chelsea and England winger underlined just how big a hole City must now fill.
“What a man to try and replace,” Cole said. “Rodri is one of the all-time Premier League greats. Such a unique footballer.”
The Spaniard didn’t just anchor City’s midfield; he controlled entire games, dictating tempo and offering a physical and tactical presence that allowed Guardiola’s side to suffocate opponents. Replacing that, Cole stressed, is a monumental task for any recruitment team.
That is where Fernandez comes in.
The Argentine’s future has become one of the sagas of the window. Strongly linked with a switch to City, Fernandez is understood to be open to a move, and Cole believes his profile fits perfectly with what Guardiola demands in the middle of the pitch.
“This Enzo saga will definitely drag on, because what you’ve got is a player who wants to move on and is wanted by multiple clubs,” Cole said. “Both parties have put a marker down, so it seems to me it’s just about money now.”
“They tend to get their man”
Cole expects City’s financial muscle to tell in the end.
“Manchester City tend to find money from somewhere, don’t they?” he added. “Wherever they find it from, that’s down to the FA and everyone else to figure out!”
For Cole, Fernandez is not just a luxury signing but a strategic one. The 23-year-old, he argued, has the technical range, composure and personality to live with the pressure of replacing a modern great at a club that demands instant success.
“But they tend to get their man, and he’s a great player,” Cole said. “I think he’s perfect for the job.”
Even so, Cole doesn’t pretend a straight one-in, one-out solution will restore City’s old balance.
Two players to replace one giant
Rodri’s ability to dominate games on his own makes him a rare case. His reading of danger, press resistance and physical dominance allowed City to play with a level of control few sides in Europe could match. Cole believes that kind of influence cannot realistically be replicated by a single arrival.
“Replacing Rodri, you need two players to do that,” he argued, pointing to the need for a blend of qualities rather than a like-for-like swap. He namechecked Elliot Anderson alongside Fernandez as the sort of top-level talent City may need in combination to rebuild the midfield platform that underpinned their success.
“Even two top quality players like [Elliot] Anderson and Fernandez,” Cole said. “I personally believe that deal will get done.”
City now know the scale of the job. Rodri is gone, the standard has been set, and in Cole’s eyes, all roads lead to Enzo Fernandez.
